Will Find for Food:

Café el Portal (New York, NY)

Distinguished by modest signage–or none at all–’hole-in-the-wall’ eateries are as common in Manhattan as corner shop bodegas. What they may lack in square footage, they more than make up for in authenticity and home-made flavor. Will Find for Food is a tribute to these gems of the city…a cheers to the ‘mom & pop’ joints, the family start-ups and so many more.

My first ‘Will Find’ locale is Café el Portal in Nolita. This family-owned treasure, located on Elizabeth Street, just south of Spring, has been serving up some of the city’s most authentic Oaxacan cuisine for the past seven years. Though unfamiliar to many, Oaxacan gastronomy is known for it’s exotic roasted chili and chocolate infused mole sauces as well as mezcal, an agave-fermented spirit who’s taste is similar to that of tequila.

Stop by and you’ll receive a warm welcome from members of the family, just before they sneak back into the kitchen to prepare your order. If you’re in the mood for some mole–which I strongly recommend–try the Enchiladas De Mole Rojo. For those who crave more unique fare, try the Burrito De Nopales, a traditionally prepared burrito made with el Portal’s secret recipe cactus. Either way, with the amazing food and friendly service, you’ll come hungry and leave happy.
